The Intellidance® Child Learning Cycle

From the moment a child is born they are learning! Early learning is experiential. Children are continually engaging and responding to environmental, sensory, and relational experiences. In the very early years, these experiences establish the foundation of a child’s knowledge base. ⠀⠀⠀⠀
Children continue to construct new knowledge by building on prior experiences. The processes of thinking, reflecting and reasoning about their experiences helps a child discover new connections and progresses them to the next level of understanding.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the Intellidance® Method, we identify the processes children move through in constructing knowledge and acquiring concepts and skills as the “Learning Cycle”.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Learning Cycle is an interactive cycle comprised of:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Awareness⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Exploration⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Acquisition⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Application⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is this ongoing Learning Cycle that takes children on a journey of exploration and discovery!

Teacher Tip: Teach Young Children Dance Conceptually

As an educator and parent, I want the children I teach to take the skills they learn in my classes and apply them outside the studio. I want what I teach to be relevant, purposeful, and meaningful in children’s day-to-day lives and help them shape a bright future. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Regardless of what paths and interests they choose to pursue, I want what they have learned at my classes to be valuable.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Conceptual dance is process driven. It challenges and inspires children to explore, inquire, and problem solve. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It helps children communicate and create meaning in the world around them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It challenges the stereotype that effective dancers must fit a certain body type. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It increases self esteem and confidence. It is holistic, beautiful, and child focused.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It takes dance from a once a week activity in the dance studio to a way of joyfully traveling through life.

The 4 C’s for 21 Century Classrooms

Intellidance® strives to be an innovative leader in early childhood conceptual dance and music education! In the past decade, we have seen a global shift towards conceptual models of education.

As our world becomes more driven by advances in technology and accessibility of information, there is less need for rote memorization of facts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As educators work to prepare students to successfully navigate a globalized culture and workforce, it can be argued that “instruction should be geared not just toward imparting a knowledge base, but toward developing, reflective, analytic, creative, and practical thinking with a knowledge base”(Sternberg,1998,p. 18).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The National Education Association identified four essential learning and innovation skills for 21st century classrooms as the 4 C’s:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
????Critical Thinking⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Conceptual education allows learners to create greater connections in their learning, apply concepts and conceptual knowledge across various subjects, think more critically about new information and situations they encounter, communicate understanding and metacognition, and collaborate more effectively with others.
